Dog control Consultation – Have Your Say

Dog control Consultation – Have Your Say

A Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) deals with potential anti-social behaviour in an area which could have a harmful effect on the quality of life for those in the local community. It can ban certain things, or need specific things to be done, in this case the control of dogs in public areas.

The Council know that most dog owners properly control their dogs and abide by the rules.  However, they want to encourage every dog owner throughout the South Hams to be responsible and these Protection Orders help with that.

PSPOs last for three years before they need to be reviewed and the current orders run out in December this year.  The District Council now need to consult on the next set of Orders for the following three year period.

  • The current review affects all existing PSPOs within the District and they want to hear what you think.  The Council is also considering introducing new orders within existing PSPO areas, as follows:
  • Dog walkers must carry dog bags or other container to collect dog waste
  • Restrict amount of dogs that can be walked at to four at a time

Reduce restriction on access for dogs on specified beaches between 10:00 and 19:00 from 1st may and 30th September inclusive in any year to between 10:00 and 17:00 from 1st July to 31st August in any one year to be consistent with Cornwall’s restrictions.

South Hams District Council want your views in a public consultation about Public Space Protection Orders for dog control in the District.

If you would like to share your thoughts about the proposals, please contact the Environmental Protection Team on: pspoconsultation@swdevon.gov.uk

COVID-19 – UPDATE APRIL 22

The latest news on local supplies and support has just been emailed to subscribers of the parish email list. Here it is…
COVID-19 – UPDATE APRIL 22
Here’s our weekly update on services and support available…
FOOD HOME DELIVERY AND COLLECTION SERVICES:
We now have a comprehensive list of all the support, click-and-collect and delivery services available to parishioners on the parish website at this link. The list will be updated weekly.
There are only a few changes to the services on offer this week:
Debbie Thorpe is collecting orders to place another combined fish order with David Walker & Son for delivery next week. She will email everyone who’s ordered or contacted her before. If anyone else wants to join in please email her on debbiesthorpe@icloud.com
Challices (fruit, veg and dairy) are now delivering 5 days a week Monday – Friday (but not Saturday as previously stated).
It is worth noting that Greenlife’s phone ordering process takes time. When you call their dedicated order number a message asks you to leave your name and number and they will call you back. The call back delay for one of our team was 1.5 hours this morning (having given up waiting yesterday), so it pays to get your call in as soon as their line opens at 9am and be prepared to wait in.
An additional delivery service added to the list this week is Dartmoor Chilli Farm who will deliver to the parish – by bicycle! See https://www.dartmoorchillifarm.com/shop.
GARDEN SUPPLIES
Longcombe Garden Centre are offering free delivery in the Totnes area which includes Staverton. To see what’s available and order go to: https://longcombecross.co.uk/pages/local-delivery
Fermoy’s are also offering a delivery service. We understand the service is good although your order may take up to 10 days to arrive. To order click here.
BUILDERS MERCHANTS
Interline Builders Merchants in Totnes are now open with a click-and-collect service for account holders only. Deliveries will start next week. Call them on 865305 to order and they will call back when the order is ready to collect.
On to other matters…
Totnes Rotary Club have written to tell us:
Totnes Rotary Club are supporting King Edward VI Community College by funding two additional 3D printers and the raw materials to make about 300 safety visors.
Over 100 have already been distributed to Leatside Surgery, the Totnes Ambulance team, Totnes Hospital, health care professionals and to Care and Respite Homes. Also, to emergency and care workers in Totnes and South Hams. With further funding Totnes Rotary will be able to produce more pieces of this essential kit and also distribute monies locally where needed.
Cold storage boxes
During this emergency, Rotary is also supporting Food In The Community by buying Cold Storage Boxes used for transporting meals in the locality.
“Our website www.totnesrotary.co.uk lists our many projects and fund raising events. It also has a donation button. Have you considered joining us? You would be most welcome”
AND CHERYL LOVEROCK HAS THIS MESSAGE ABOUT SCRUBS:
My friend Dawn Brewer (Designer & Seamstress Extraordinaire!) of Broadhempston has gathered together a sewing group to make much-needed scrubs for Torbay hospital workers, GP Surgeries and Care Homes. They are aiming to make 500. She has now purchased a bale of the special fabric and the necessary patterns and they are hoping to get under way this week.
The sewing group is giving their time and it is hoped to donate all the scrubs to the various organisations – so I am asking if you would consider sending a small financial contribution to cover the materials. Donations can be made by bacs to:
C M Loverock – Scrubs for Carers, Sort Code:77-68-62, A/c: 01378160
or contact Cheryl on 01803-762677 for more information.
Many thanks from Cheryl in anticipation!
As before, the people to contact in the parish if you need any information or help are:
Michael and Cheryl Loverock
Email: loverock@btinternet.com
Tel: 01803-762677
To sign off this week we have two footnotes – a poem and some virtual music.
The poem, by Pam Ayres, is very topical and funny (especially if you are a girl of the 60’s) – you can read it here.
The music is the Milwaukee Symphony (Virtual) Orchestra playing Elgar’s Nimrod here.
Keep well!

PS
Don’t forget Staverton.org website has now introduced a chat forum. An example of a post…
“Look up to see SpaceX’s Starlink satellites this evening around 9:33. Best to look from 9:25 until 9:40. They will take 6 mins to pass, travelling west to east, starting at 10 degree elevation from the west horizon rising to 60 degrees elevation and dropping to 10 degrees at the east horizon.”
Once registered, you can chat away! Click here and join in!

COVID-19 – UPDATE APRIL 8

THIS WEEK’S UPDATE ON LOCAL SERVICES AVAILABLE

There have been a number of additions and changes to the way delivery and collection services for the parish now operate, so here is our weekly round-up with an updated list of those we know of:

Ben’s Farm Shop – ordering for collection

Ordering online for collection the following day is now available to all customers (previously it was just loyalty card holders).

Orders are accepted online only by completing the order form or go to their home page and click on ‘collections’ at the top. Orders need to be made by 5pm for collection the next day between 9am and 12pm. They will call you when your order is ready to collect. A member of staff will bring it to your car. They are resisting setting a minimum order value, but want to discourage small orders (particularly from people doing the bulk of their shopping elsewhere). They tell us: “We have been inundated with orders, so please be patient and wait for us to call you on the day of collection.  Please do not contact us to check the status of your order – we need our telephone lines clear to contact our customers when their orders are ready.”

Challices: wholesale fruit and veg merchant in Totnes

As well as fruit and veg, they are also delivering dairy (milk and cheese) and bread to homes throughout the parish. Now delivering (no delivery charge) to the parish six days a week, Monday – Saturday. Orders need to be phoned in by 12.00 day before to 01803-863553. Pay by BACS– bank details on invoice with delivery www.challices.co.uk.

Halls the Butchers

Halls will deliver to Staverton parish after their shop has shut in the evenings. As well as meats, they offer quiches, pies and pasties, eggs and cold meats. Call: 01803-863178. Pay by cheque, BACS or cash – they can’t accept cards.

Bulk Buy Groceries part of longstanding food distributor Westcountry Fruit Sales.
Delivering to people’s homes Monday to Saturday with next day deliveries.
Provide a full range of fresh produce, fruit boxes, milk & dairy, kitchen groceries, cleaning products, wines and beers to the door. Operating no contact delivery, so no need to worry about contact with the driver.
Orders can be phoned to 01326 331900 Mon to Fri, 9am to 4pm or emailed to hello@bulkbuygroceries.co.uk . www.bulkbuygroceries.co.uk.              Facebook:  @bulkbuygroceries.co.uk

Greenlife in Totnes are now providing an order by phone and collect service for their loyalty card holders over 65. (They will also deliver in Totnes, Bridgetown and Dartington). Phone 07394-072628 between 09.00 – 12.00 for collection between 13.00 – 18.00 same day. Fruit, veg, chilled and frozen foods excluded from this service. Full info at www.greenlife.co.uk

Barnaby’s Brewhouse offers a home delivery service for its beers. Full order details at: https://barnabysbrewhouse.com/local-delivery-service/
New Lion Brewery also offers a home delivery service for its beers. Full order details at: www.newlionbrewery.co.uk

Fresh Fish

David Walker & Sons from Brixham deliver fresh fish, vacuum or ice packed if desired. Debbie Thorpe who lives in Southford Lane has very kindly offered to coordinate these fish orders as Walkers need a £150 minimum combined order value to make it worth delivering to the parish. If you would like to place an order, first contact Debbie by email at debbiesthorpe@icloud.com. She will send you a price list and arrange the order. She will place an order once she has £150 worth of individual orders in hand. Delivery will normally be mid-week for collection at the Sea Trout car park – Debbie will give precise times for each delivery. Payment to Debbie by BACS. This week’s order has already been placed, so it may be a while before she gets to another £150 worth.

The Fish Deli Ashburton: pricelist at www.thefishdeli.co.uk
Email your order to information@thefishdeli.co.uk or phone 01364-65483 between 9am – 2pm. They will prepare your order and vacuum pack it ready for fresh use or to freeze and ring you back when it is ready, to take payment and advise you of any substitutions and arrange a collection time from outside the shop. They say:“Unfortunately, the availability of fish supplies have become increasingly difficult, as there is no export market or restaurant market and for many boats this makes it not viable for them to go to sea. Also there are issues with transporting small quantities around the country. So please bear with us in these difficult times and we will of course do our best for you.”

Wings of St Mawes deliver fish nationwide. See thecornishfishmonger.co.uk for full information.

Useful sources

These two new websites have been set up to list local suppliers offering delivery and order collection services. Being new, they may not come up in a Google search, so you will probably need to enter the full name in the bar at the top of your browser:
www.totnesdelivers.co.uk shows firms in Totnes now doing deliveries and collections. We do not know which ones will come out as far as our parish, so you will have to make that enquiry direct to any suppliers shown on the website.
www.shopsouthdevon.com aims to do much the same.

Darts Farm in Topsham deliver fruit, veg and meat all over Devon. See www.dartsfarm.co.uk for full information.

Cooked Food:

The Tally Ho!: If you want something cooked for you, The Tally Ho! In Littlehempston is offering takeaways on Wednesday and Friday evenings from 5pm. You can pick up from the pub’s garden (and also get beer to takeaway). Food orders need to be placed by 10am same day by calling Kelly and Mike on 01803-862316. Pay by cash or credit card. Full menus can be seen at  https://www.facebook.com/tallyholittlehempston/posts/1266625710193105

Medical Matters

There has been little change from two weeks ago.
We can collect prescriptions for you from Boots at Leatside Surgery, but we need plenty of lead time to be able to collect together as many as possible in one visit – as they are letting only one person at a time into the shop, which means a very long wait each time. All other pharmacies are operating social distancing, so expect a wait.

The following medical centres have updated their websites with covid-19 advice:
Leatside Totnes
Catherine House Totnes
Ashburton Surgery

They all say that they will triage all requests for a consultation and need a phone call or request entered via their website – in the coronavirus situation most requests will be handled over the phone or via an e-consultation which can be accessed through a link on their websites.

Ashburton Surgery now has its phone lines working again.

Buckfastleigh Surgery website advices on what to do if needing to see a doctor.

If you need any help or support, just contact:
Michael and Cheryl Loverock
Email: loverock@btinternet.com
Tel: 01803-762677

And here is the link for Citizens Advice Coronavirus – they still have advisers taking calls, although not that many.

Postal services

Dartington PO is closed except for bank deposits and cash withdrawals. The shop is open as usual.
Broadhempston PO in the Community Shop is open for normal business 09.00 – 12.00 weekdays. Shopping can be ordered by phone.
Totnes PO is open 09.00 – 12.00 Tuesday, Wednesday & Friday for normal business, but are requesting only essential parcels please.

If you are running out of stamps or need to send a parcel or package without going to a post office, these online services are available:

Royal Mail Online Shop: www.postofficeshop.co.uk – sells books of stamps online.

Royal Mail ‘Click and Drop’ lets you buy postage for packages and parcels online – pay by credit card and print off the postage label. You will still have to take it to a post office if it’s too big for a letterbox, but it does reduce the need for contact as all you need do is hand it over.

Parcel2go is an excellent site for sending parcels via a number of the major carriers at very good rates. Some offer collection from home – with Hermes normally being the cheapest – otherwise you’ll need to take it to a local drop-off point. Just enter your parcel’s details and a variety of options come up.

Internet Scams Alert

CITIZENS ADVICE SOUTH HAMS WARN OF A RISE IN CORONAVIRUS SCAMS AND FALSE INFORMATION

Citizens Advice South Hams have today issued a stark warning about the rise in the number of scams being reported in the region and the worrying rise of false information being shared on social media.

Scammers are using the ongoing Coronavirus crisis to target people in a variety of ways including emails and SMS text messages. Some scammers are claiming to be from HMRC offering a tax refund or from the World Health Organisation with a link to a Coronavirus cure.

If you receive an email or SMS text message from someone or an organisation that you do not know, guidance is clear, do not open it or click any of the links.

Janie Moor, Chief Officer Citizens Advice South Hams said, “In addition to our warning about email and texts, we also need to highlight bogus callers both on the phone and in person. This could be someone purporting to be from a company or a neighbour offering to buy shopping or collect prescriptions. Never share personal details such as PIN numbers and bank cards with anyone. If possible ask a person you know well to collect shopping and run errands. If you have any concerns ring the Safer Neighbourhood Police team on 101.

This is a deeply distressing and worrying time for people and unfortunately scammers will use any trick. Now more than ever is a time for us all to be on guard and to spread this advice to our friends and families including the elderly and vulnerable.”

Citizens Advice has advice on how to check if something might be a scam at
www.citizensadvice.org.uk/consumer/scams/check-if-something-might-be-a-scam/ or alternatively you can call the Scams Action Fraud line on 0300 123 2040 for more information or to report a scam.

Citizens Advice South Hams is also warning about the large amount of bogus and incorrect information being shared across social networks and on messaging apps. They are urging people to seek impartial, correct advice and are signposting people to use trusted sources such as the www.Gov.uk website, local councils and the Citizens Advices website www.citizensadvice.org.uk where there is regularly updated bespoke guidance for people facing challenges arising out of the Coronavirus outbreak
https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/health/coronavirus-what-it-means-for-you/ .

For those who may not have access to the internet or need further advice then Citizens Advice offices throughout Devon are responding to these challenging times by continuing to offer a wide range of telephone advice.

Consumer Helpline: 0808 223 1133

Universal Credit, Help to Claim phone line: 0800 144 8444

General Adviceline: 03444 111444

Teena Barrett, Advice Services Manager for the local charity says, “We intend to keep our service running as much as possible, it is at times like this people need access to trusted and impartial information. I am hugely proud of the way our volunteers, staff and trustees have worked tirelessly to ensure we can continue to give advice to those who live, work and study across Devon”

All Citizen Advice offices in Devon have stopped face to face appointments in line with guidance from Public Health England and the UK Government.

COVID-19 – UPDATE ON LOCAL SERVICES AVAILABLE

COVID-19 – UPDATE ON LOCAL SERVICES AVAILABLE
Now that our movements are so severely restricted, here is the latest information we have on food delivery and collection services, and medical support available to the parish.
Some of these services are new and evolving, so you may find the way they operate has changed somewhat by the time you order, but as of today:
Challices: a wholesale fruit and veg merchant in Totnes are refocusing on home deliveries to help local housebound people while their core business to the catering trade has dropped off. They have been piloting home deliveries in another area nearby and are now ready to roll it out to Staverton parish.
As well as fruit and veg, they are supplying dairy (milk and cheese) and bread. They will deliver (no delivery charge) to the parish on Tuesdays and Fridays. Orders need to be phoned in by 12.00 the day before to 01803-863553 for free delivery next day. Pay by card over the phone. http://www.challices.co.uk/
Ben’s Shop: providing an ‘order by email and collect the following day’ service to loyalty card holders only.
Orders are collected from their café (which is otherwise closed) or they will bring it to the car if you phone from the carpark.
Halls the Butchers will deliver to Staverton parish after their shop has shut in the evenings. As well as meats, they offer quiches, pies and pasties, eggs and cold meats. Call: 01803-863178. Pay by cheque, bacs or cash – they can’t accept cards.
David Walker & Sons from Brixham deliver fresh fish, vacuum or ice packed if desired. Will deliver to Staverton either Monday pm (or perhaps Tuesday) to a central collection point* . Order by noon Monday on 01803-882097.
www.davidwalkerandson.com. E:walkersfishbrixham@gmail.com
From further afield:
Darts Farm in Topsham deliver fruit, veg and meat all over Devon. See https://www.dartsfarm.co.uk/ for full information.
Wings of St Mawes deliver fish nationwide. See https://thecornishfishmonger.co.uk for full information.
Both Riverford Organics box scheme and Wottons Farm apologise that they cannot take on any new customers at the moment as they are fully stretched looking after existing customers.
And if you have a delivery slot with a supermarket coming up soon, you might like to consider adding any housebound neighbour’s needs to it.
*The Court Room kitchen will be used as a central delivery and collection point.
Now onto medical matters:
We can collect prescriptions for you from Boots at Leatside Surgery, but we need plenty of lead time to be able to collect together as many as possible in one visit – as they are letting only one person at a time into the shop, which means a very long wait each time.
The following medical centres have updated their websites
They all say that they will triage all requests for a consultation and need a phone call or request entered via their website – in the coronavirus situation most requests will be handled over the phone or via an e-consultation which can be accessed through a link on their websites
Ashburton has a temporary problem with their phones and can only be contacted through email!
Buckfastleigh Surgery’s website does not mention coronavirus – so we presume you ring the surgery as normal and they will tell you what happens next.
Citizens Advice Coronavirus – they still have advisers taking calls, although not that many.
As we are all in this together … do keep a caring eye out for your neighbours, especially if they are in any of the vulnerable groups, and offer help if needed.
If you need any help or support, just contact Michael and Cheryl Loverock on
