Landscove Church of England Primary School
Landscove
Devon
TQ13 7LY
01803 762656The school started providing education for children from the village & surrounding areas in 1854 & we are still going strong today with 105 children on roll. The school is a vibrant & lively place to be & there is always something interesting going on in our 4 classes. Highlights of the recent past include our involvement in a project that put a potato into space, maypole dancing, surfing, having a climbing wall at the school, residential visits… and more. By September we will have a new school hall that will be a great asset to the school & by the end of October we will be part of a federation where we work more closely with five other village schools in the locality. And amidst all the excitement we still continue to provide an excellent broad based education with standards amongst the highest in the area. We also hold a number of awards, one of the most significant being a Food For Life Flagship School as acknowledgement for our growing & food based activities including the quality of our award winning organic school dinners – delivered hot & tasty direct from Riverford Farm each day & eaten by most of the children. In fact we even had produce displayed on a school stand at Chelsea Flower Show this year that won a Silver Gilt medal (see photo below!). Who knows what new “adventures” we will get involved with in the years to come but you can guarantee life at the school will never be boring but continue to be exciting & engaging for everyone who works & learns here every day! Robin Smith
Note from the editor: the last time there were as many as 105 children enrolled at the school was in 1941 when the school (under the head mistress Miss Bright) took in students who were war-time evacuees during the bombing of London.

The beautiful mid 18th century church of St Matthew has two stunning, and unusual features. One feature is the broached spire which is rather untypical for the Devon style, and the other is the beautiful Grade II listed slate-roof, buttressed lych gate.Designed by John Loughborough Pearson who later became the architect of Truro Cathedral, the church was built at a cost of approximately £3000 and generously financed by a Mrs Champernowne. As a previous owner of Dartington Hall, Mrs Champernowne also funded the building of Landscove School and the Vicarage now known as Hill House. Both the church and school were built to serve the many parishioners living nearby in cottages at Thornecroft where they were employed at Penn Recca slate mine. (from where the slate for the Houses of Parliament roof were quarried). As a result, the ecclesiastical parishes of both Landscove and Staverton (St Paul de Leon) co-exist within the one civil Parish known as ‘Staverton with Landscove’.
The vicarage was sold in 1960 to the author Edward Hyams and his design of the gardens at Hill House was the subject of his book ‘An Englishman’s Garden’. The garden subsequently joined a list of the top 1000 gardens and contains a wide variety or rare plants.
Following the retirement of the revd. Nicholas Pearkes our church has become part of the newly-formed benefice of Dart valley Mission community.
As well as Landscove , this comprises the churches of Buckfastleigh , Dean Prior,Staverton and Littlehempston.
For information, including details of services and the contact details of the rev. Tom Benson and other members of the team who will be helping to lead our services, please see the website
