January’s book club was a cosy affair in the Sea Trout as we discussed Ali Smith’s much lauded post-Brexit novel Autumn and Elena Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend. Autumn divided our readers with some confusion over timelines and the fact it was not written in chronological order yet other readers loved this aspect of the novel and the touching relationship between the old man and his younger female friend which built over many years. Most of us did not have time to get very far into the first of Ferrante’s bestsellers but what we had read spurred us all on to read more. Indeed there are two sequels which I imagine might become choices in future book club events.
Meanwhile February’s choice is the blockbuster Conclave by Robert Harris and Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman. Feel free to read one or both or just come and enjoy a convivial chat in the warm, friendly surroundings of our lovely pub.
