County Councillor report for Staverton Parish Council meeting 1st February 2023
Someone forgot to tell the weather about dry January; beat the blues with ‘Brew Monday’ and get around for £2!
Residents encouraged to sign up now for March garden waste collections
Residents encouraged to sign up now for March garden waste collections
Residents of the South Hams who want to sign up to the new fortnightly garden waste collection service are being encouraged to sign up before 22 January, to ensure the service can be as efficient as possible.
Thousands of residents have already signed up for the service since subscriptions went live on 1 November. Anyone in the district can sign up; an annual £49 subscription covers collections for one brown wheelie bin, with a maximum of two subscriptions for two bins per household.
The first collections will begin in March. The Council is encouraging everyone who wants their first collection in March to sign up by 22 January. This is so Council staff have enough time to create the collection rounds and get everything ready ahead of launch. The more people that sign up by 22 January, the more robust and efficient the rounds will be.
Everyone will still be able to sign up after 22 January, but your starting date may be delayed.
Cllr Keith Baldry, South Hams Executive Member for Environment, said: “We’d love to see as many residents as possible signed up to the new garden waste collection service by 22 January. This will allow us to create the most efficient and best collection routes possible for our subscribers.
“Our team have been working very hard to ensure we’re ready to provide the district with a new and improved garden waste collection service in the spring. We want to reassure residents that the annual subscription fee will purely cover the cost of the service, with no profit being made. Compared to what private companies charge for collections, the annual fee represents good value for money.”
Residents can sign up to the new service in two ways:
- The quickest and easiest way to sign up is on our website: www.southhams.gov.uk/
gardenwaste – the website is full of information and useful FAQs on the service.
- Alternatively, call us:
You can call us on 01803 861234. We expect phone lines to be busy, so there may be a wait.
Residents can keep their garden waste wheelie bin even if they choose not to subscribe to this service. Anyone who decides not to sign up to the service and would like to have their brown bin removed can fill out our online contact form at: www.southhams.gov.uk/
Those who decide not to sign up for the service can still take their garden waste to all three recycling centres in the South Hams. Full details, including opening hours, are available online here: South Hams Recycling Centres

A38 Ashburton to Caton eastbound overnight lane and slip road closures for road marking renewals works -Tuesday 17 January to Friday 20 January 2023
A38 Ashburton exit slip road (Linhay) eastbound overnight closures for vegetation clearance – 23 to 25 January 2023
National Highways operates, maintains and improves England’s motorways and major A-roads. This email is to let you know about upcoming works on the A38 at Ashburton.
Road marking renewal works on the A38 eastbound from Ashburton to Caton will start on the evening of Tuesday 17 January and finish on the morning of Friday 20 January and will take place overnight between the hours of 8pm and 6am.
To minimise disruption, we’ll work on weeknights only when there are fewer vehicles on the road. The road will remain open during the works, with a convoy traffic management system in place and may involve a short wait at traffic lights. During the day we will keep the road open as usual. The work is currently programmed as follows:
- Tuesday 17 January to Friday 20 January – overnight lane closures on the eastbound carriageway between Ashburton and Caton, with a convoy traffic management system in place for 3 nights from 8pm until 6am the following morning. During the works, the following slip and entry/exit roads will be fully closed from 9pm each evening:
- At Ashburton, Whistley Hill junction eastbound exit slip
- At Ashburton, Old Totnes road eastbound entry slip
- Eastbound exit slip towards B3352
- Eastbound exit slip towards A353 and Widecombe
There will be a fully signed diversion route in place for the slip and entry/exit roads full closures, but please allow extra time for your journey. Access for residents will be maintained but may involve a short delay depending on our stage of work. Please show a copy of this postcard to our gatemen who will escort you through the works if necessary.
The Ashburton (Linhay) exit slip eastbound will be closed for 2 nights from Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 January, 8pm in the evening to 6am the following morning. We’ll be carrying out vegetation clearance to ensure there is enough head room for heavy goods vehicles and cutting back fir trees (sides only) next to the footway to clear space for pedestrians. We’ll work overnight when traffic flows are at their lowest. Works may be noisy, please accept our apologies in advance for any disturbance which may be caused.
Traffic management while the slip road is closed will involve traffic for Ashburton being diverted to Goodstone exit slip to join the A38 westbound, before leaving at Ashburton exit slip.
We’ll make every effort to ensure the impact on the local community and travelling public is kept to a minimum. We always aim to work to the programme, however unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather conditions may mean changes.
If you would like further information about this work, please contact National Highways Customer Contact Centre on 0300 123 5000 open 24/7, who will direct your enquiry to the most appropriate person, or email: email@example.com

Let’s Talk Pre-Teens
Good morning and a Happy New Year,
The South Devon and Dartmoor Community Safety Partnership have been working with a wide range of partners to produce a toolkit to support parents of pre-teens (9-12 year olds). This has been developed as a result of the resounding success of the Let’s Talk Teenagers programme that has seen 2497 engagements with parents and carers so far. FREE online sessions through the Let’s Talk programme for parents and carers of pre-teens are available this month.
The Let’s Talk program is designed to increase parent and carers knowledge around the key risks whilst giving simple tools and techniques to help them support their child. As a partnership we acknowledge that parenting can be really difficult, especially in such challenging times. We want to get these resources to as many parents as possible and we need your help! We would be really grateful if you could share the information included in this email with all your contacts and communities so we can reach as many parents and carers as possible. From the 2nd of January we will be running a social media campaign through Devon County Council so if you have social media please share the posts.
Tickets are free and available at Let’s Talk Pre-Teens.
The topics covered will be as follows:
Tuesday 17th January 2023
- Difficult emotions

Tuesday 24th January 2023
